a room with a view
so....after a bit of stress with AOL and trying to get onto the net in my room I finally went ot bed. Up at about 7.30am, got ready and got a cab to the Diplomatic Area where DTZ are based. The cabbie took me to the wrong place and I ended up at Cluttons offices. The cabbie had gone and the security gaurd at the wrong building told me to go to the Sheraton Complex and pointed. I didn't have a mobile phone and it didn't look that far......what a mistake. I was drenched with sweat within minutes and all the locals were staring at me. I dont think its the done think for an expat to be wandering the streets in 35c..and that was at 8.30am. Finally got to the Sheraton Complex and found a toilet to cool down in some air con.
Got to the office and got introduced to everyone and then within an hour I was heading off with a graduate called Danny who has been out here for 2 weeks. Danny the scouser and I were off to inspect a metal works factory.....it was so hot in there....hotter than a sauna and I aint joking. It must have been a stich up but so far no one has admitted that it was.
Back to the air conditioned office for a couple of hours where I was given a new mobile and laptop. Right at the end of the day I picked up my runabout vehicle, a nissan sunny. It aint great looking but the air con is awesome so who cares.
The boss (Robin) suggested we go for drinks at the Ritz Carlton and it was really nice...shame I didn't have my camera with me. I can't wait to take Laura there for a meal. Danny and Nick (from Leeds and who will be setting up the Qatar office in a month) both came as well. A couple of hours there and then we went to an Irish pub and drank until 11.30pm.
I hungover today. Nick and Robin carried on until 3pm apparently - these boys can drink. Got into work a little late having struggled to find a petrol filling station (like gold dust they are).
Robin has asked me if I would go to Libya in his stead on Sunday. Flying business class (yeah babey) and staying for 5 days. I have to acquire a 30,000 sq ft office out there.
So, its the end of my 2nd day at work and its all good although it is quite tough being without melady.
So here's a photo of the view from my office window...the building being built is the World Trade Centre (1,500,000 sq ft) which is managed and being promoted by my firm - bring it on.
www.bahrainwtc.com - if you look at the images of the wtc you can see a small blue office block about a 3rd of the size of the wtc, thats our offices - well the 9th floor is.
